Geothermal Heating and Cooling: Can It Save You Money?

We all want to save money on energy bills. Surprisingly the solution to achieving this can be found below ground. While outside temperatures through the year can range from 100 + to – 20° Fahrenheit, the Earth maintains a relatively constant temperature. The constant temperature of the Earth just below our feet is a sustainable clean energy resource. It is ready for us to use to heat and cool homes and offices while lowering energy bills.

Nearly half of your energy bill goes to heating and cooling your home or business. The other half goes to lighting, appliances, and others uses. The biggest opportunity to save money on your energy bill is through your HVAC equipment.

Traditional Systems Aren’t Very Efficient

Traditional air conditioners and heat pumps can vary in efficiency and tend to be least efficient when they need to be most efficient. The higher the outdoor temperature, the harder it is to cool a building. The same is true when heating a building (in other words, colder outdoor temperature = less efficiency).

The Geothermal Solution

Geothermal heating and cooling systems use the Earth below, which is constantly at a range of 55-70° F year round, to exchange heat with cooling and vice versa. The Exchange Rates (of high/ low temperatures) for these systems is faster than traditional air conditioner / heat pump-based systems. Additionally, geothermal heat pumps are more than twice as efficient as any other normal air conditioners or heat pumps. Unlike a gas furnace a Geothermal system burns no fossil fuels.

EPA Approved

The US Environmental Protection Agency has determined that Geothermal Heat Pumps are the most efficient, cost effective, and environmentally friendly heating and cooling systems available. Along with quicker operating times these systems are the quietest in the industry – which is a benefit for you and your guests. These units also last longer than any other available system, which eliminates replacement cost paranoia.

If you or a friend has any questions about maintenance, repair, or installations of a geothermal heat pump system please feel free to call: (843) 870-2076. We will be happy to provide you with a trained expert who will inform you about this up and coming technology.
